Member Spotlight: Dakota Mill & Grain - Presho Terminal

Dakota Mill & Grain, founded in 2000 by Thomas and Judy Lien, is proud to be one of the few family-owned private gain companies left in the United States. From Highmore on the east to Bell Fourche on the west, the company operates 10 locations in western South Dakota and specializes in grain marketing, agronomy sales and service, and animal nutrition.

Construction of their state-of-the-art rail terminal in Presho started in 2017. The facility was completed to the extent that it could take in wheat by July 2018, and fully operational by October 2018. The bulk of its 4.9-million-bushel upright storage consists of four 750,000-bushel corrugated steel bins. Their tagline Helping You Grow highlights the company’s dedication to service; a value reflected in the Presho location’s quick and efficient grain processing system that uses digital signage to direct drivers to one of two 1,500-bushel receiving pits. In a time when much of the industry is faced with workforce shortages, the Presho location boasts a facility fully staffed with longstanding, local employees.

All of Dakota Mill & Grain's facilities have been members of the South Dakota Agri-Business Association since the merger of SDABA and the South Dakota Grain & Feed Association (SDGFA) in 2022. Prior to that, they had been a member of the SDGFA since the company’s inception.

Dakota Mill & Grain’s General Manager, Bart Banks, serves on the SDABA Board of Directors and is the organization’s immediate past president. He shared his support of the Association, “SDABA is a valuable source of relevant information and industry resources and is our voice in Pierre on issues affecting our agribusinesses.”
